From Gray Concrete Balcony…to Beautiful View of the World

This high-rise was in hot demand for its spectacular view of the city…but something drastic needed to be done about that boring, gray, concrete bowling alley of a balcony! Becoming a welcoming, desirable living and lounging space was Priority One. The best thing to do was to take advantage of the wall separations, creating a living space or distinct “rooms” within each area.

Focusing on creating a main “living area”, natural elements like the sisal rug provided a designated space to build a conversation area around. The nubby texture of the rug also created the perfect counterpoint to the smooth, heaviness of the concrete. Adding antique architectural panels to the concrete wall dividers created visual and textural interest. Living plants literally added life to the dull space.

Two super cushy sofas, covered in “cream” Perennials fabric (a line of fabrics made specifically for heavy outdoor use) added inviting softness. The “creamy” color, along with the large back pillows, sent the desired “come sit a while” message to an otherwise hard-edged space.

In keeping with the overall aesthetic of the space, a piece of contemporary art sculpture was selected as a focal point on the walls.
